What Is a Spiritual Healer? Meaning, Gifts, and How They Help You Heal
A spiritual healer supports the parts of healing connected with energy, emotion, meaning, and spiritual well-being. They may use Reiki, sound, breath, meditation, prayer, or intuitive guidance. This work can complement other forms of care, but it is not a replacement for medicine or therapy.
People rarely come to spiritual healing because life feels neat and easy to explain.
More often, there is a heaviness they cannot quite name. They may be moving through grief, a relationship ending, a loss of direction, or a long period of caring for everybody except themselves. Sometimes they simply say, “I don’t feel like me anymore.”
In my work, I do not see myself as the person who owns the answer. I listen, hold the space, and use the practices I have studied to help someone come back into relationship with their own body, heart, and intuition. Anahata was founded around this belief that people can reconnect with the healing wisdom and spiritual potential already within them.
What Is a Spiritual Healer?
The term covers a wide range of practitioners.
One healer may work almost entirely through prayer. Another may offer Reiki or chakra work. Someone else may combine meditation, sound, breathwork, ritual, and spiritual coaching.
So the title alone does not tell you whether a person is experienced, grounded, or right for you. You need to look at how they work.
A good spiritual healer offers attention, care, and a clear method. They do not decide what your experience means before listening to you. They do not make you feel that healing is something only they can give.
Spiritual healer, energy healer, and faith healer
The names overlap, but they usually point toward slightly different ways of working.
An energy healer focuses on subtle energy and may use Reiki, Pranic Healing, chakra work, or another energy-based modality.
A spiritual healer may include those practices while also working with prayer, meditation, sound, breath, ritual, or intuitive conversation.
A faith healer usually works within a particular religious tradition and understands healing through divine intervention, prayer, or faith.
You may also come across the term metaphysical healer. It is generally used for someone whose work involves consciousness, intuition, energy, or spiritual meaning.
I would not choose a practitioner because one title sounds more powerful than another. I would want to know what happens in the room.
How spiritual healing differs from conventional medicine
Spiritual healing sits within complementary care.
Reiki, for example, is described by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health as a complementary approach in which a practitioner places their hands lightly on or just above the body. Research has not clearly shown Reiki to treat health conditions, and there is no scientific evidence confirming the proposed energy field behind it.
That matters.
A responsible healer should not diagnose an illness, tell you to stop medication, or discourage you from seeing a doctor or mental health professional. Spiritual work may offer comfort, reflection, rest, and a sense of connection. It does not replace clinical treatment.
What Does a Spiritual Healer Actually Do?
In my sessions, the first part is often the simplest. We talk.
You may know exactly what you want help with. You may have no words for it yet. Both are welcome.
From there, the work can take different forms. At Anahata, sessions may draw from Reiki, Pranic Healing, sound, meditation, breathwork, chakra work, and intuitive guidance. The person remains fully clothed and rests while the session unfolds.
Working with the energy body, chakras, and the heart
Energy-healing traditions often speak of the chakras as centers connected with different areas of our physical, emotional, and spiritual experience.
Anahata is the Sanskrit name for the heart chakra.
The heart holds more than love. It also holds grief. Trust. Courage. Forgiveness. The ache of giving too much. The fear of opening up again after you have been hurt.
A session may bring attention to the places where you feel guarded, depleted, or disconnected. Nothing has to be forced open. Sometimes the work is simply giving your body enough quiet to stop bracing for a moment.
Common ways a spiritual healer may work
Depending on their training, a healer might use Reiki, sound bowls, meditation, breathwork, prayer, chakra balancing, ritual, or intuitive reflection.
The approach may be quiet and hands-off. It may involve conversation. It may include sound or guided breathing.
You can read more about these different approaches in What Is Energy Healing Therapy?.
The Gifts and Qualities of a Spiritual Healer
Sensitivity is often where the path begins.
Many healers remember noticing the atmosphere in a room before anyone spoke. People may have confided in them from a young age. They might feel deeply affected by other people’s emotions, experience vivid dreams, or feel restored by nature and solitude.
Spiritual teachers sometimes describe these experiences as possible signs of a healer’s calling. They are not a professional qualification on their own.
Empathy, intuition, and energetic sensitivity
Empathy helps a healer meet another person with care.
Intuition may help them notice what deserves gentler attention or when a session needs to slow down. Sensitivity can make them aware of small shifts that another person has not yet put into words.
These gifts need boundaries.
Without boundaries, empathy becomes exhaustion. Without discernment, intuition can become assumption. A healer has to learn when they are sensing something clearly and when their own history, fear, or hope has entered the room.
Training and lineage
Natural sensitivity can lead someone toward healing work. Training teaches them how to hold it responsibly.
That may include learning a specific practice, receiving supervision, working with consent, understanding boundaries, and knowing when another form of support is needed.
My own path has included Reiki, Pranic Healing, Seichem, breathwork, meditation, sound, Kundalini Yoga, and coaching. The purpose of studying several modalities was never to collect impressive titles. It was to understand how to meet different people with greater care.
What Happens in a Spiritual Healing Session?
You do not need to prepare a spiritual version of yourself before you arrive.
You can come tired, unsure, emotional, or unable to explain what has been happening.
Before the session
The practitioner should ask what has brought you in and explain how they work. This is also the time to talk about touch, comfort, boundaries, and anything you do not want included.
You should feel able to ask questions. You should also feel able to change your mind.
During the session
For energy work, you will usually lie down or rest while fully clothed. The practitioner may place their hands lightly on you, with permission, or keep them just above the body. Sound, guided breathing, meditation, or chakra work may also be included.
Some people feel warmth. Others notice tingling, emotion, a slower breath, or deep rest. Some feel very little.
There is no reaction you need to produce.
Afterward
You may leave feeling calm and spacious. You may feel tired. An emotion or memory may surface later. Or the session may simply give you an hour in which you do not have to manage, perform, or hold everything together.
Healing does not always announce itself.
Sometimes you only notice that you slept better, spoke more honestly, or finally admitted what had been bothering you.
Can Anyone Become a Spiritual Healer?
I believe everyone can have a healing presence.
You may bring it through the way you listen, teach, cook, make music, care for children, tend a garden, or sit beside someone who is grieving.
Professional healing work asks for something more. It asks you to become responsible for how you use your sensitivity.
You may recognize some of the commonly described seven signs that you are a healer:
People have always trusted you with personal things.
You sense changes in people or spaces quickly.
You have moved through experiences that deepened your compassion.
You feel drawn to healing traditions, energy, sound, or prayer.
You care deeply about relieving suffering.
You keep returning to the idea of service.
You want to understand your gifts rather than simply be praised for them.
These signs are an invitation, not a certificate.
Begin with your own healing. Study one modality carefully. Receive the work yourself. Find a teacher you trust. Notice where your boundaries are strong and where they disappear.
How to Choose a Spiritual Healer You Can Trust
A healer may have a beautiful website, glowing testimonials, and a long list of trainings. You still need to notice how they make you feel.
Can you ask a direct question and receive a direct answer?
Do they explain their method without frightening you or claiming special access to your truth?
Be cautious around anyone who:
promises to cure illness
tells you to stop medical treatment
says every problem is caused by blocked energy
claims that only they can clear or protect you
pressures you into repeat sessions
treats your boundaries as resistance
makes you afraid to trust yourself
A trustworthy healer should help you feel more connected to your own judgment.

Questions People Often Ask Before Booking
What does a spiritual healer do?
A spiritual healer offers support through practices such as Reiki, sound, prayer, meditation, breathwork, chakra work, or intuitive guidance. The exact method depends on their training. Their role is to create a supportive space and offer tools, while respecting that the healing process remains yours.
What is the difference between a spiritual healer and an energy healer?
An energy healer usually works mainly with subtle energy through practices such as Reiki, Pranic Healing, or chakra balancing. A spiritual healer may use energy work along with prayer, sound, breath, meditation, or coaching. Many practitioners use both terms because their work crosses these areas.
How do I know if I need a spiritual healer?
You may seek spiritual healing when you feel emotionally heavy, disconnected from yourself, uncertain about your direction, or in need of quiet support during change. You do not need to be in crisis. Medical symptoms and serious mental health concerns should still be taken to qualified professionals.
Is spiritual healing real?
The rest, meaning, ritual, and personal connection experienced in a session may feel very real to the person receiving it. Scientific evidence for Reiki as a treatment remains inconsistent, and the proposed energy field has not been established. It is best approached as complementary spiritual care rather than medical treatment.
What happens during a spiritual healing session?
You usually begin by speaking about what has brought you in. You then rest fully clothed while the practitioner uses the methods you have agreed upon, which may include Reiki, sound, breath, meditation, or chakra work. Experiences vary, and there is no sensation or emotional response you must have.
Healing Should Bring You Closer to Yourself
I do not want anyone to leave a session believing that their power lives in my hands.
The practitioner matters. Training matters. Feeling safe matters. But spiritual healing is not about becoming dependent on somebody who appears more gifted, intuitive, or awakened than you.
It is about creating a pause.
Inside that pause, you may hear the truth you have been avoiding. You may feel your body soften. You may remember that your life is still yours to shape.
A healer can walk beside you for part of that return. They cannot make the journey in your place.
